about

N.B. A version of the Max patch described below is included in the download for this album. You will need Max/MSP to run the patch.

This album was conceived in a span of a few hours one afternoon, using an old Max/MSP patch I made titled "AutoMagic Music." Early instances of this patch go back to around 2009 when Jeph Jerman and I were figuring out what to do with a large number of recordings he and I made together. Rather than release these recordings as an album we decided to distribute a Max patch that continually reconfigures and mangles these recordings. That idea never saw the light of day, but fast forward to late 2023 when I resurrected this patch and fed it samples from my current palette of sounds. I spent an afternoon curating recordings from this patch which became material for this album. No edits were made to the songs, with only minimal treatments done in mastering.

The underlying concept for this album is "first thought, best thought." The goal was to let ideas flow without extensive editing, capturing the essence of the original intention. Often, in my music creation process, I generate ideas quickly but then over-edit, losing the magic of the initial inspiration.

While the creation of the patch was a time-consuming process, the album itself materialized in just a few hours. There's a sense of spontaneity found also in punk rock or improvised music within this approach—prioritizing raw, unedited authenticity over perfection, questioning the illusion of striving for flawlessness, and presenting the first idea without extensive refinement.
